Donald Trump’s first foreign trip as president, to Buenos Aires, was a forum for the president to reach out to other world leaders, but to himself it was a chance to show an America he hoped would never be taken over by detractors.

Through a series of tweets and interviews with reporters on that trip, Mr. Trump announced he would announce “close to $250 billion” in sanctions on Russia and China in the coming days.

Standing on the steps of the Argentinian presidential palace, he held a news conference that day, and spoke glowingly of Trump who was on the world stage for the first time since an investigation of Moscow and the Trump campaign broke on Oct. 30. The next day, the indictment of three Kremlin-linked Russians found that in 2016, they aimed to use social media to damage Democrats and help Mr. Trump win the election. That statement, posted on Facebook, sent Mr. Trump back on the campaign trail, back to social media and back to thousands of meetings between Republicans and the Russians.

The parties were in court on Wednesday, with prosecutors with Mr. Mueller claiming that Mr. Trump “created and sought to cover up” the actions of Russian influence agents attempting to interfere in the 2016 election. They also believe Mr. Trump asked Russia to hack the Democratic National Committee and spread misinformation about Democratic policies and events. Mr. Trump, who suggested on Wednesday that he would pardon himself in the event of a guilty verdict, stood with his former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, the other official on trial, Michael Cohen, and his former lawyer, Michael Cohen. They denied all the charges, citing Mr. Trump’s well-documented denial of any collusion.

But just beyond the trial’s noise, the spectacle of the potential sentencing of Mr. Manafort for a $32 million fraud, with the sentence designed to fill the holes left by Mr. Trump’s failure to name a special counsel, served to raise the profile of Mr. Trump’s own legal mess — his possible interference in a federal law enforcement operation.

And the series of still-unfolding stories related to Mr. Trump, in which additional details of his campaign’s Russian contacts, activity and plans during the campaign emerged, provided further data points that threaten to cast further questions over his character.

Mr. Trump has denied that he had any knowledge of a meeting with former campaign official Roger Stone, who, as a consultant to the president, is alleged to have communicated with WikiLeaks, which released stolen emails in what was deemed the most damaging attack against Hillary Clinton. Mr. Stone’s meeting with Russian intelligence officials is said to have taken place in Washington in the summer of 2016, before the Russian hackers broke into the Democratic National Committee’s computers and released those emails, damaging Clinton’s campaign. The White House has said Mr. Trump was not aware of the Stone meeting.
